The two most popular aluminium alloys in CNC machining are 6061-T6 and 7075-T6. The right choice determines both cost and part life.
6061-T6: versatile and economical
Medium strength, weldable and corrosion resistant. It anodises very well, making it the first choice for visible parts, housings, fixtures and general machine parts.
7075-T6: high strength
Its strength approaches some steels; it is used in aerospace, motorsport and load-bearing parts. It is not suitable for welding, has lower corrosion resistance than 6061 and costs more.
In short
- Load not critical and anodising matters: 6061
- Strength-to-weight ratio is critical: 7075
