What is anodising and when to use it?

October 17, 2026 · 3 min read

Anodising is an electrochemical process that builds a controlled oxide layer on aluminium. It protects the part against corrosion and allows colouring.

Decorative anodising

5–25 µm thick, natural, black or coloured. Ideal for visible product parts and housings.

Hard anodising

25–60 µm thick and highly wear resistant; used on slides, pistons and rubbing surfaces.

Effect on dimensions

About half of the layer grows outward from the surface. Allow for this on precision fits; surfaces can be masked if needed. Alloy 6061 gives the best anodising results.
